I just posted a problem I ran into, while upgrading from Solr 5.3 to 5.4 ( https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-7844). I don't know if it should be another reason to hold on w/ 5.4.1. If there is a workaround, then it shouldn't. But otherwise (I hope I'm drawing the right conclusions here), SOLR-7844 fixed leader election in such a way that prevents upgrading from 5.3 (unless you take down the entire Solr cluster).
