We have found repeated basic problems with stuff like equals/hashcode recently,
I think we should consolidate tests and cleanup here.
these different implementations also have a little assortment of simplistic
unit tests, if its not doing anything impl-specific, we should fold those in
too. these are easy to debug and great to see fail if something is wrong.
I will work up a patch.
