(1) Can you define what you consider to be an edge case?
(2) Are you talking about the BKD implementation, or Geo3D, when you claim it 
is basically untested?  I find this extremely hard to believe unless you are in 
essence trying to fold both implementations together in your mind.  It was 
first tested heavily in the context of spatial, entirely outside of any Lucene 
considerations at all.
