Just a quick patch, needs a bit of review and polish, but this is along the
lines I was thinking of for a fix.
Not super satisfied with the 'names' issue, but not sure what we should do at
the moment. We might want a higher upper limit and/or to make it configurable.
Or perhaps there should be some kind of cleaner thread that prunes occasionally?
