Attaching backport patch for 6x.
* The simple recipe above tested on macOS
* The 6.x version of {{HttpClientUtil}} did not have the
{{clearRequestInterceptors()}} method, so I backported that as well.
* Passes precommit
Instead of cherry-picking 6 commits and then adding another commit for fixing
6x specific issues, I'll squash all of this into one commit on branch_6x and
instead list all related master commit hashes in the log.
