Hi Judith, sorry I missed this part of your comment at the time. I also don't
quite see the whole picture w.r.t. how the group.format==simple is implemented.
It seemed quite subtle though i.e. maybe it would be trickier to happen
elsewhere and in fewer places. Drilling into the history of the code might help
understand the implementation but I haven't gone looking and so can't say.
