Thanks for the suggestion [~dsmiley]! And my apologies for the looong delay on
this issue. I had to put it on the back burner but was recently able to get
back to it. Your suggestion made it much cleaner, and easier to read, I think.
I have attached an updated patch for review. Let me know if you have any
thoughts and I'll get this closed up as soon as possible.
