I'd like to have a better understanding of how much of Solr is unique to it versus directly extending Lucene.

For example, I assume that sharding, replication, etc. is implemented in Solr where-as indexing, querying, etc. would be implemented by Lucene.

I'm hoping to learn enough to be able to contribute at some point.
