I think it would be a great improvement for 7.x. The patch is very much WIP and
there will of course be a ton of documentation fixes etc. But the current patch
does its best to parse solr.in.sh|cmd so we have a good chance of maintaining
back-compat for all of 7.x and then accept only one format in 8.x
