I think the need for an API like this is still valid though I'd probably
explore lucene's replication module for such a thing. The existing
ReplicationHandler has become too complicated and intertwined with solr cloud
to be easily adaptable for this use-case. In any case, I don't have the time to
pursue this any time soon. We should close this and open a new one if/when
someone is willing to do the work.
