Here's a patch that extracts testRandom3() into its own class, and suppresses 
MemoryCodec on it.  [~mikemccand] I think you wrote this test originally, can 
you comment on the need for lots of docs here?  If it's useful then I'll commit 
this patch, if not then we can just take out the nightly loop that Robert 
mentions.
