Shawn: awesome that you finally figured out the problem -- never would have
ocured to me you were running tests as root.
i actually want to re-open this and make the test catch this.
similar to how i made the test "assume" the setReadOnly call worked, i want the
test to "assume" !isWritable so you don't get false failures here.
