My use case for this is to permit effective indexing on local nodes across a 
cluster by local processes - in a "shared nothing" architecture as much as is 
possible. Let's say I have 100 machines each with their own Solr server. Each 
machine will process data and commit index writes locally. This avoids global 
locking and also 100 x n number of threads hitting a central server/port (which 
won't scale). It should be possible then, to reconcile the 100 x n indexes 
either at query time (federated search) or merge time (distributed merge). In 
my scenario, I'm not as concerned about replication or redundancy from the 
cloud. Cheers.
