This sounds like a user configuration error.
the ping request handler just executes whatever query it's configured to
execute (in solrconfig.xml) ... whatever query you have configured for the
"/admin/ping" handler needs to be something that actually works with your
schema.xml (ie: if you don't have a default search field, then your ping query
needs to have an explicit field, or use \*:\*, etc...)
