more wrapped-reader inconsistencies/bugs

I added a maybeWrap to testDuelingCodecs and ran it a while (like 50
iterations) before committing.
of course then i made an unrelated change and it randomly failed:

Some kind of wrapped-reader/codec is returning unindexed fields in its
FieldsEnum
