If you're going to make pluggable distribution policies, why stick to hashing?
Why not do the general case?

Very good point. The patches I've attached do not attempt to address other
partitioning schemes such as date based or federated as my immediate
requirement is to be able to customize the hashing. Implementation of a
pluggable distribution policy is the logical end state, however I have not had
the time to investigate potential approaches for such a change yet.

> If the data in a cloud can be partitioned on some criteria (say range, hash,
> attribute value etc) It will be easy to narrow down the search to a smaller
> subset of shards and in effect can achieve more efficient search.
