I know the log settings can be changed. I’m asking about how the default was decided, and whether it can be “improved”.
Oh, and I am referring to simply running the Solr example right out of the box, with its embedded Jetty. No servlet container configuration involved. In any case, the Solr tutorial should point people to super-easy-to-follow instructions for how to get a “reasonable” log format. Do such instructions exist? I could only find the following: http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrLogging http://wiki.apache.org/solr/LoggingInDefaultJettySetup Neither of which fits my definition of super-easy-to-follow, which is why I think getting the default “right” is super important. Are both of those wikis considered up to date? I did see a reference to Solr 3.5. -- Jack Krupansky From: Uwe Schindler Sent: Friday, August 17, 2012 11:13 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Where did the milliseconds go? It depends on how you configure the log format in your servlet container. Solr no longer enforces one, just add the correct logging jar. Please don’t start the flamewar again. It’s easy and more universal, now. What you see is just the default logging. ----- Uwe Schindler H.-H.-Meier-Allee 63, D-28213 Bremen http://www.thetaphi.de eMail: [email protected] From: Jack Krupansky [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, August 17, 2012 4:59 PM To: Lucene/Solr Dev Subject: Where did the milliseconds go? I personally have found it useful to see time in the Solr log include milliseconds, but it is no longer included, even in 3.6.1. Actually, I do see it in the first few log entries, but then the log format changes: 2012-08-17 10:41:35.826:INFO:oejsh.ContextHandler:started o.e.j.w.WebAppContext{/solr,file:/C:/cygwin/home/projects/apache-solr-4.0.0-BETA/apache-solr-4.0.0-BETA/example-books/solr-webapp/webapp/},C:\ cygwin\home\projects\apache-solr-4.0.0-BETA\apache-solr-4.0.0-BETA\example-books/webapps/solr.war Aug 17, 2012 10:41:35 AM org.apache.solr.core.SolrResourceLoader locateSolrHome INFO: JNDI not configured for solr (NoInitialContextEx) I much prefer the initial header format: 2012-08-17 10:41:35.826:INFO:oejsh.ContextHandler:started To the revised header format: Aug 17, 2012 10:41:35 AM org.apache.solr.core.SolrResourceLoader locateSolrHome INFO: Oh, and it looks like every log entry in the new format occupies TWO lines. Was this a conscious and Solr community-consensus decision, or just an inadvertent side effect of updating log jars? Can we get the old format back? Thanks. -- Jack Krupansky
