A more thorough patch for trunk. (Needs javadocs and minor cleanups etc etc,
but all backwards compat and such).
I would deprecate this stuff in branch_4x still.
I would also, in branch_4x, include my original fix on this issue for not
including blocktree's versioning. this itself can also be backwards compat (its
just an if statement).
