The checkbox was never necessary - it's just that people became used to seeing
it and started assuming it was.
Contributions to our software are under the ASL by default - one would need to
explicitly state when adding something that looks like a contribution to our
JIRA that it was in fact *not* a contribution (and that is what the old
checkbox facilitated).
