I personally develop for the large scale - that's where the party is - and I want the software I work on to be the best for the large scale that it can be out of the box. It's much easier for a user to work that out for a smaller scale than the reverse. I want Solr out of the box to be a scaling monster. I have very little concern for the guy that want's to run Solr with 5 other webapps. That guy has to suffer for the greater good.
