First I couldn't understand how this could happen but this is because of the evilness in BaseTokenStreamTestCase: it sometimes only partially consumes the stream (when evilness == 7) and can leave a trailing surrogate in the buffer. This bug would never have been found under normal use, so kudos to whoever wrote this test!
