I was able to reproduce the ordering issue. It was due to the sort="" param.
The code was expecting sort to be left off the request instead of an empty sort
criteria sent. I'll resolve this as part of SOLR-5416 and add a test for this.
In the meantime if you leave out sort parameter when it's empty it will solve
the ordering issues.
I'm checking on the null pointer issue now.
