The binary distributions, such as those in mahout-distribution-0.4.tar.bz2, do not include the mahout-collections jar, running the mahout script in standalone mode (with no HADOOP_HOME set) will run into problems as a result.
The current release build assumes that the collections project is under the root project and part of the main build instead of being treated as a separate build. It's a simple enough fix, trying it out now.
