Actually, most clusters do calculate a radius (stdev) along with the centroid. 
It is of the same dimensionality as the centroid vector, creating an 
ellipsoidal shape.

Distance is a fine thing to emit.

exp(-distance^2 / (2 * radius^2)) might be better if there is a natural
definition for radius.
