Hi Tuygun, It is certainly worth a try that we help you identify such a topic.
First of all, you should be aware that Mahout is currently undergoing a large refactoring and we are in the process of reducing the number of implemented algorithms to only keep those which are used and actively maintained. In my personal opinion, simply implementing algorithm X from paper Y and contributing this to Mahout would not be such a great idea in the moment. As a first step, you should give us a hint what your preferred area of work is? Databases / Information Management, Machine Learning / Statistics, Software Engineering? Do you already have experience with Hadoop? Do you have access to a cluster? You should also make sure that your advisor is ok with this direction of your thesis and is actively supporting you.
