Problem solved!
The correct compilation command was "mvn clean install -Dhadoop2
-Dhadoop2.version=2.4.0 -DskipTests=true".
The problem was a dot in -Dhadoop2.version - only one needed. I appears to
compile with -Dhadoop.2.version also, but it actually compiles to hadoop 1.
