I'd say you're on the right track :) Read through the user and dev mailing lists, and browse through the tickets in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/mahout/?selectedTab=com.atlassian.jira.jira-projects-plugin:summary-panel
Look for features and bugs that seem to be important, check in with the dev list, ask for guidance when you're still finding your way and at any time. If you have ideas post them to the dev list and gauge interest and find out who would be able to mentor what you're interested in doing.
