Here are the choices:
(1) Use a special character to signal an empty extension, e.g. "-" or "."
(2) Use regex's instead of exact matches for extensions
(3) Except optional quotation marks around extensions
(4) Add a checkbox or some such allow the user to explicitly state whether
blank extensions can be used
