The main reason why I suggested Bitstream Vera Sans is that it's shipped with OOo.

BTW, the font editor I mentioned used to called pfaedit. It's now FontForge, and as good as I remember it. Maybe it would be relatively quick to design a font using only the letters of OpenOffice.org - it would only need 10 glyphs, if I'm counting correctly.
