So don't change the name just let people drop the .org if they want to, in day to day discussion or even in the documentation.
Condoning dropping .org is changing the name and reducing the branding efforts of OpenOffice.org.
Otherwise we'll be forever reminding journalists and the like to please add the .org.
It is not forever reminding, but providing an opportunity to introduce yourself and talk to the journalist. Most journalists work to very close deadlines and unless they receive the correct information or can easily find the correct information, incorrect details are promulgated. All the journalists that I have contacted have been very appreciative.
No ambiguity would be introduced, no special votes or announcements are required, we just stop
correcting people when they refer to "OpenOffice"
This in effect is saying, just cross the branding and identity item off the MP list. Let someone else do this for us.
I don't see have two versions of the name would seriously hurt marketing, given that they are almost identical, its just accepting how the brandname is being used by large numbers of our customers.
At the moment our perceived market share is much smaller than that of the market leader. We have every opportunity to differentiate from the other office suite with .org.
MSFT are attempting to add "community" to their product, by having a developer conference (we have had two OOoCon), shared source, and more recently open source. See: http://software.silicon.com/applications/0,39024653,39127679,00.htm
It is a lot easier for us to say we are ahead as we have had the .org all the time, MSFT are just catching up.
On the other hand the community aspect is an essential aspect of our marketing so retaining the .org for logos etc makes sense.
The purpose of the MP is to market both OpenOffice.org the product and OpenOffice.org the community.
Like the source, without the community, we would be a product just like the other.
