A lot of universities students in the U.S. and Canada are members in co-operatives and there's a lot of overlap between the founding principles of open source development and co-operatives. Perhaps, that would be one good way of several to inform students about OOo.

Maybe there's a better word than 'consumer'
I still can't appreaciate the term consumer in a non-biological/ecological context especially after hearing Doc Searls' comments about creatures in a closed system that crap cash and have to eat whatever the multi-nationals decide to shake into the tank.
