Hi

This relates to NeoOffice/j and Mac OS X X11 marketing.

Briefly, to finalize a long process, I asked Ed if he would be willing
to post download information on the porting Mac download page. He
agreed, and is coordinating with the other Mac porters. The idea is to
offer Neo/J side by side with X11; not to deprecate X11 but to make it
clear that an excellent derivation, NeoOffice/J, also exists. Neo/J
does not use any OOo resources--all its files are on other servers.
Neither Ed nor Patrick Luby, who maintains NeoOffice/J and holds
copyright over it, has expressed any desire for us (OOo) to market or
promote NeoOffice/j (Neo/J). However, I think we owe it to Mac fans to
apprise them of the existence of the project.

The reason for this promotion of Neo/J is simple: it's more usable and
its use does not adversely affect development of the X11 branch, which
is widely recognized to be necessary. The logical problem has always
been double:

        * advocating a non-OOo product
        * the use of OOo resources by non-OOo products
(and, implicitly, defining what makes up an OOo product)

Of the two, the first is easier to deal with. Advocating Neo/j sets but
a weak precedent. Ed has been exquisitely circumspect about promoting
NeoOffce/J and has been very careful not to use the OOo project for
Neo/J's purposes; so has Patrick. Further, he continues to contribute to
the project. In other words, a kind of set of criteria has been
established that if not perfectly generalizable, nevertheless allows us
a vantage point.

(In another thread, I'll propose some criteria--which we've discussed
before--to listing other derived products.)

As to how to market NeoOffice/J: When mentioning the platforms that OOo
runs on, we can basically keep the same marketing language "runs on Mac
OS X", and amplify that by specifying the X11 and NeoOffice/J builds,
with URLs and the information that NeoOffice/J is *not* an OOo build but
is copyrighted by Patrick Luby. It is his project, his work, and he
deserves the credit.

Finally, we are coming up to the time of Apple's WWDC. As in years past,
I look forward to sharing the booth with Patrick and Ed.

Cheers
Louis
