Microsoft has a really good (IMHO) user community/volunteer recognition program - called "MVP" (Most Valuable professional)
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/
That's good as a longer-term and more permanent type of recognition, but it's also rather bureaucratic, IMO.
And it's no substitute for genuine, personal thanks from project leaders to the volunteers who work with them -- or from volunteers to each other.
Both approaches together can be good -- immediate positive feedback, followed up by more permanent recognition when appropriate. But IMO, the immediate feedback is the most important for keeping volunteers motivated.
