Herewith the Branding Brainstorming thread.

The purpose of this is to Brainstorm about the Art we are going to create for the Marketing Projects Marketing Materials. I've posted it on the art list and cc'd the marketing list for those who may not be on both. If you feel you wish to comment please reply on the Art list

So one or two points to start with.

There is no guarantee that any of the art generated by this issue will be used. Louis has made that clear.
The idea behind this is to show what the Members of the Art project are capable of and to prove that our branding really does need to be dragged up to date and it can be handled

Ok What are the strengths of the OOo brand. That isn't really all that difficult. The Name: OpenOffice.org

The graphics are the weakest. And this especially applies to our Logo. The strongest part of the logo is the word. The Seagulls are not a strong Visual Iconic brand outside the OOo community

As with all evolution in branding, there needs to be some continuity. So lets keep the strongest element; the name in full and with the similar free font to the original.

I have excellent reasons for keeping the OpenOffice.org besides the recognition factor. This has to do with what the Name and the way it is represented in the logo and the Three parts of that logo within the word. It tells a story and it says a lot about this project. Let me expand a little

Open is a different colour to Office because that speaks about the Open Source nature of OOo. Open to all. That's a very strong statement.
Office because thats what our clients want out of it: Office Productivity. And that's a different colour to emphasise the difference between where it comes from and for whom it is created. Finally the Org, the same colour as the Open to emphasise the connection to the wider open source community but still connected to the clents as part of the greater community, which includes our corporate partners, the developers, the marketing people, the QA, the support people.

So to me the two colour OpenOffice.org stays. Toga font is a good open font that is almost identical to the original proprietary font. Whether the present colours are still relevant who knows...Lets see what comes out of the wash.

After Jacqueline made comment earlier defending the Gulls, I dug into the depths of my bookcase and re-read Jonathon Livingston Seagull and I have to admit, that it resonated.... with a little suspension of disbelief of course. ;) So I'm much more keen on the Gulls evolving

I originally suggested midnight sunday week (Mar 6) to be ready, because we're under pressure of time.
