I've seen some Macro converters, one among them being developed by Sun.
But what can be said since the beginning is that the automated
conversion of macros do not work that well and doesn't seem to be the
right way, but one way among others to migrate to OOo/SO. Over here in
France (I have examples of top OOo consultants here and what I see in my
business regularly) the focus is twofold:
-rewrite/implement macros or similar macros if possible
-simply leave VB and OOo macros aside. By migrating to OOo it is often
noticed that it helps reshaping the IT and the document processing
system of an organization in a much more healthier way, and macros are
just not that hearlthy except in some precise cases.

Of course, it is also the case that even in large migrations the
organizational impact plays a really important role: for instance, the
CFO office /accounting department will refuse to migrate because of
"their untouchable macros", and so they'll stick to their own tools.
After all the banking and accounting sectors tend to be fairly
conservative when it comes to IT, but that's another story.

INGOTS and other certification programs, coupled with corporate training
are important elements of a migration, however, what you describe with
the early adopters is only a late step in the migration. You may well
have OOo admirers in a company, maybe even have the IT director/CTO/CIO
willing to migrate but the decision may not be that easy to take and a
fair amount of organization planning and scanning is required before any
action.

Best,
Charles.
