Actually, the full name is "OASIS OpenDocument Format for Office Applications".

You *have* to abreviate it. I think that OpenDocument is the abreviation that is closest to the name and is still short. OpenDoc should be avoided because there was another format by IBM years ago which was called OpenDoc.

Otherwise people become confused and even other proprietary formats with maybe "Open" in their name can't be differentiated from the original format.

That's an argument to minimize the proliferation of abbreviations, but not to use the full name. I say that OpenDocument and ODF are good.
