I can't exactly apologise on behalf of OpenOffice.org for the
unmannerly and juvenile responses of the list members who replied to
you but the responses were not characteristic of OOo, or at least of
what it should be. We aim to hold ourselves to higher standards than
that, and I ask that you reconsider joining this project.

I am sorry I didn't respond earlier to John White's post. But I'll
address it directly.
It is indeed legal to sell LGPL licensed software. In the case of
OOo, the location of the source is clearly present upon starting up,
so a developer can get it if she wants. Is selling it ethical? That
depends on several things, the most important being, of course, Is
the seller making a buck off the ignorance of his buyer? Or is the
seller adding value, either the value of more stuff or of
convenience? If the former, then it's clearly verging into the
unethical, as duping anyone is unethical. If the latter, no, it's
ethical and even good. In fact, we have a courtesy list of CDROM
distributors here, http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/ . One of
its purposes is to normalise what is offered and police behaviour.
The listing John cited,<http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?

%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26satitle%3D6825770026%26fvi%3D1>, WINDOWS
SOFTWARE SUPER SUITE CD, is one I've seen before. They are actually
selling 1.1.4, and they refer to OOo directly. If I were to approach
them, I'd ask them to work with us, not exploit us.
Best,
Louis
