Hello

I feel that it is necessary that this particular conversation proceeds
so that it is publically archived for future reference. I apologise to
list subscribers in advance, but in a way it gives me the opportunity to
explain how the the OpenOffice.org Marketing Project (MP) fits within
the larger OpenOffice.org community.

Previous discussions of similar nuances and negativity I have let go, as
like most people I avoid unpleasantness. Also, I don't believe that I
need to be involved in every argument/discussion I'm invited to. So I
would like to use this opportunity to begin to address this if and when
they arise so we can get back on track with the purpose of this and
other OOo lists.

By posting to this public list you have removed the opportunity for
Ryan to step down in good grace.

I asked Ryan before I posted my note if it was okay with him for me
to do so, and he agreed that the real reason should be known. I would
not have posted in public otherwise.

Subscribers to this list still do not know the real reason for Ryan
posting "Goodbye and Good Luck". Your post too, does not explain this.

Your idea of "good grace" must be different from mine. His abrupt departure could otherwise be interpreted by others as sour grapes,

That is how I interpreted Ryan's post and the quote that you replied to
in your message: "Ryan Singer wrote, it greatly pains and disappoints me
to say that it is time for me to leave this community. I have always
tried to do well by the project, but it seems that my efforts are no
longer appreciated. I think that if this project is to survive as more
than a facade in front of the largely corporately controlled engineering
processes, it will need to learn how to better recognize and reward
volunteer contributers."

rather than gracefully accepting a demand from you to resign.

I did not request or suggest Ryan to "resign". If unsubscribing from OOo
lists as he said in his message is to be interpreted as resigning, he is
doing this of his own volition.

The OpenOffice.org project guidelines suggest communications of these types of decisions privately, and I remember you yourself said praise on-list and critique off-list. I disagree with this approach when it comes down to the situation we have at hand. New people join the project and lists every day. They do not have the background to understand where people are coming from. That is, you can point to and extol a person's virtues by referring to the archives, but there is no public reference to any constructive criticism or correction as this is off-list.

That is true. No one ever knows the full story, sometimes not even the direct participants.

At least if messages are in public view then people have the opportunity
to establish an informed opinion and request further information and
seek further understanding.

I will only now consider public critique to Ryan at his request.

I don't understand this sentence. Do you mean that if Ryan says okay,
you will give the reasons here? I have forwarded your note to Ryan
(as he is no longer on the list), and cc'd him on this note from me,
so we'll see what happens.

It means, I have no problem with Ryan posting my private message to this
list. The subject is "revoking MarCon role". In that message I described
some of the reasons.

You may be unaware, but it is illegal in Australia to forward private
mail without permission. If Ryan wishes to forward any private
communication between us, I invite him to do so if he gives me the same
right, and it will assist us to seek closure on this issue.

Regards
Jacqueline McNally
