My concerns with the marketing for OOo are nor merely to the belgian
market. I think that there is a need for global marketing support to
give OOo a push to the market. As I pointed out earlier, I can
joint the Dutch project to help with translations, eg. No probs
there. But I also believe that I can use my knowledge and experience
to provide what I do to everyone in the community.
I believe that marketing, even for a OS product, should be top- down
approach, guided trough a bottom-up concensus on the plan.
I agree. As a Danish OOo MarCon, I feel there's a need for more
coordination between the local marketing efforts. If the global OOo
marketing project can not provide the coordination we need, we might
just as well communicate directly. Som please feel welcome to email
me. I'm sure the Danish OOo team will be happy to cooperate with you!
What would either of you propose? I'm all for more coordination among
the various groups. So are the MP leads, I imagine. I tend to travel
among the various NLC groups and have noted that though organic
identity helps it also requires a lot of energy to sustain. Having a
global effort that is coordinated can help everyone. But... what would
you suggest as a concrete activity? Remember, our goal is not just to
get people to use OOo but also to contribute to it; we market not just
the product but also the project.
Best,
Louis
I didn't have any concrete activities in mind, when I wrote this. I just
thought: "here is a guy with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of skills
that could be really useful in the marketing project, and he is
frustrated because nobody on the list can help him get started and show
him what to do". I know that feeling, because I have often felt so
myself. And I didn't want that Steven just left left the project again,
so that's why I suggested that Steven could email me, so we could share
thought and ideas about OOo marketing.
Concerning concrete activities: I have earlier suggested a newspaper
advertisement (inspired by the well-known Firefox ad) on this list, but
I didn't get any positive feedback. So I started working on the project
locally. I have already found several Danish companies who are willing
to sponsor an advertisment, and having already some sponsors makes it
easier to get more companies become interested. I thinks it's sometimes
easier to try something locally, and if it works, then inform others
about it: "We did this this. It worked. Maybe it will work for you, too.".
Best regards,
Finn
