Hi all,For the past week I have tried to find out something more about OOo and especially about its community. I found it a closed community at first... Now I am losing track... The thing really needs guidance... At least marketing project does.
And yet, nevertheless, we attend conferences, create PR, have labels for discs, help coordinate a quite large yearly conference, and manage to produce collateral, faq, etc., explaining what we are and what we do. To be sure, the to-dos are out of date, and there is not a periodic session with quarterly goals. But what do you mean by guidance?
I suggested some things that can help the product, and thus the community.
Indeed.... thanks... and as always, suggestions are welcome; even more welcome are actions....but that goes without saying... Marketing OOo is alas not just doing what you like but ultimately what needs to be done, where "what needs to be done" is agreed upon by an ensemble. That ensemble, I've tried to highlight, includes the developers, too.
One reason I do not look at the Development side of OOo is that I find it a job well done...
Really? Most people actually love to complain about it. :-/ Mostly, they complain from ignorance, or out of somewhat misguided frustration. For instance, their favourite patch may not be accepted, or they may wonder why it wasn't.
I do not like ideas similar to going JamboOffice style :) But hey...
you mean in terms of changing the name... ? Yes, it has its shortcomings. But: look at Firefox :-)
I understand the very close link to StarOffice... (Why do OpenOffice and StarOffice Icons look so similar? Is their a commercial reason? Can anyone explain me the relationship between OOo and SO? And mostly: who's first whit what. Important to me.)
Read http://about.openoffice.org/As to why they look alike: Think of OOo as a bud of SO's tree. I think it would be interesting to create marketing material that differentiates more from SO; there is *no* reason why there should be such identity. I would *love* it if the community were to intervene and try to make OOo more "theirs"--and that community includes Sun and the other corporate sponsors.
If I am goint to work for Sun :) They'll have to pay me my regular fee :)
:-/
So, I hope to find some answers...
Well, I proposed the meeting to Martin Hollmichel and Stefan Taxhet, and we agreed to revive the Release Committee list. The idea I want to underscore is to increase dialogue (two way communication, not just one way) b/w developers and marketing. The RC is one way to do it; periodic IRC meetings a complement to it, as it could include people not covered by the list.
As to changing the look of the icons, etc.: most of them are licensed by Sun. But that doesn't mean we have to use those alone, though given that Sun pays for hosting here, I'd guess that binaries taken from this site will have them for some while to come. But other options can exist.
Cheers, Louis
