I have just had a meeting with senior people in BECTA and there is
interest in devising ways of getting OOo onto all new PCs sold to
schools. This isn't as straightforward as it might at first sound
because schools buy independently from a vast number of different
suppliers. I have some ideas but if anyone has any of their own let me
know so I can provide some options.
Could BECTA allow PC suppliers to be "BECTA approved", or something
similar, with a requirement that to be an approved supplier they
include an OOo CD with all new computers sold to schools. Maybe BECTA
could have a list on their web site of all approved suppliers to
encourage companies to join.
It could be an option to see if Ubuntu, or other linux distributors,
would be willing to provide free CDs to the suppliers. These CDs could
be based on TheOpenCD for win32 to include other opensource software
(possibly with the full win32 install from the OOo CD to include all
supported languages) and also include a second CD with Ubuntu Linux (for
example).
Thanks
