Thoughts ?
I think we should pick a set of market segments where it's easier to
sell FOSS. What I got from Bruce's article was not that Linux on the
desktop is hopeless, but that Tech Writers are not the best segment to
target.

Good point - technical authors are not a target market
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Strategic_Marketing_Plan#Target_Markets
although we do have an action to encourage authors to write about OOo
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Strategic_Marketing_Plan#People
(it is desirable but not mandatory for them to use OOo to create their
manuscripts :-)
One more thought :)
Having some experience in technical writing, I would like to add that it
depends also of the editor that will publish your book. For instance,
Eyrolles is my publisher and I always used a OOo style sheet when
writing for them. I know several authors that have been quite surprised
by OOo during their writing, because it was requested by the editor to
use a OOo style sheet.
More, they are also able to promote our software by special editorial
collection or conferences, see :
http://www.eyrolles.com/Informatique/Vitrines/Logiciel_libre/conference.html
this one were organized for Tristan Nitot and me, there were about 120
attendees in the room and we both speaks about our project structure.
Speaking about local editors, they can help a lot in marketing our
product and communities not only by selling books about FLOSS.
Kind regards
Sophie
