Sounds like an option. One of the earlier replies mentioned a possible catch phrase. How about one like

        buy none, get two* free

save up to <retailpriceofMSO2007> per package/seat
        on the latest productivity software

        * or as many as you like

People are looking for discounts on that day and the BND crowd are looking to get people to think about not buying. It's a plausible joint effort.

Hi,

Friday November 24th is also celebrated by the U.S. culture
jammer/Adbusters crowd as "Buy Nothing Day." As it's the "biggest
shopping day of the year" a contingent of activists have staked it out
as a day without purchasing anything at all. That might add to the
hook of an OOo promotion.

I believe the following day is International Buy Nothing Day, since
most countries don't have Friday off work to shop all day. I'm working
with a contingent in NYC on Buy Nothing Day festivities, and I have
promoted Free Software at our BND activities in the past. If any New
Yorkers on this list would like to join us drop me an email off-list
and I'll give you the details. -Thanks, Michael

p.s. forgive me if this is well-tread ground, I looked through the
archives and there didn't appear to be any mention of BND. I hope it
helps.

Revisiting the coupon / voucher idea here.

Thursday 23 Nov or Friday 24 Nov might be a good lauch date if we do a
coupon or voucher for those waiting for MSO 2007 giving them a "free
download" of OOo. Those days are part of the US Thanksgiving holiday and
that Friday is when many start to think more about holiday/end of year
purchases and even any significant purchases for the beginning of next
year. Saving a few hundred dollars might be an attractive option. During
the holidays they'll have time, maybe, to try out OOo, since they won't be
fiddling with MSO 2007 until next year.

Coupon size is about 1/8 of a page. So what kind of information can we or
should we put in a 1/8th page (A4 or US Letter), targeted to people
thinking about MSO 2007 ?

Simple is better, so only a few phrases and maybe a few bullet points and
a logo plus URL might do. What needs to be communicated to pique the
interest of that audience?

PS Just for entertainment I requested a rate card for a very widely
distributed coupon book at my alama mater. I don't expect that we're
likely to want to or be able to cough up money for publication in one
town, let alone several towns, however key they might be. But just for
comparison, it was $620 for a distribution of 35,000.

PPS Having OOo, Friends of OOo, OOo authors, etc. become a 'day sponsor'
of an NPR station or program would reach a lot of receptive people. But
that's not a serious suggestion since it costs money and advertising ==
high burn rate.

As far as I know the US Government hasn't yet made it a criminal offence
to make payments in Euro, but I can understand your concerns :-)

Seriously, thanks for the suggestion: I've raised it as an issue:
