The problem turned out to be the permissions on the source file.
I changed the permissions and all is working now.

I tried to upload an image (.PNG), following the instructions in
the wiki help. The image uploaded (and displayed) only part of
the file, although the image size (in pixels) was correctly
reported and a box of that size was displayed. So I tried
uploading it again; this time the filesize was reported as zero
bytes, despite a "successful upload" message. I then tried
uploading a different image (also PNG) and again got a zero-byte
size. Same result with JPG image.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what is wrong?
