Hi John,
Sorry that I write directly to you. I tried to post to the d...@marketing, but it seems that I didn't change my e-mail on that list.
Never mind,
On Wednesday this week the Municipal of Tønder will hand out USB- Sticks with F/OSS software to all students and teachers. OpenOffice.org is on the stick of cause.
12-12-08: Free computer software for students and teachers
Absolutely free and for free use for all students and teachers at the municipal elementary schools in municipality of Tønder on Wednesday around noon handed over a so-called USB key - a little gimmick to tuck into the computer, and there you are: a hwole line of computer programs for free use - including programs for word processing and programs for the treatment of sound, images and much, much more. Municipality of Tønder wants to be in the frontline when it comes to the use of IT in schools. So we are, and we have been for a long time- and now we deliver this "stick" so that all students have a common IT platform to work on. THis way we can exchange pictures, sounds, text and virtually everything else, "says Erik S. Kristensen and Bo Ramsing, both educational IT consultants for schools in the municipality of Tønder. As far as we know, Tønder is the first municipality in Denmark, which provide free software for all schoolchildren. The project has been in collaboration with the Center for Software (http://www.softwareborsen.dk ) in IT and Telecom, and there is particular so-called "open source" programs, ie programs that are free. By pooling their programs and extradite them to a single USB stick for all, we ensuring that all municipal students and teachers can have access to the same programs both at school and at home. This gives the opportunity to both to use the tools in connection with the school, and better able to "talk" via electronics, continuing the two IT consultants. Each USB stick has a capacity of a Giga-byte, is beautifully designed in aluminum-look, and with "Tønder municipality" printed. For Tønder Municipality has been a less costly to manufacture - a cost that we have shared with IT and Telecom, but ultimately this is a very good investment in our pupils - and in the solid Tønder Municipality image as a pioneering municipality in the IT field, says Erik S. Kristensen and Bo Ramsing. Moreover, there is great interest in the municipality of Tonder handling and use of free programs, among others seen by traffic statistics on the website, www.skolekonsulenterne.dk
Tønder is in front
At the IT and Tele Agency Authority's Center for Software is caseworker Morten Hansen Kristoffer very pleased with the initiative of the municipality Tønder, and he hopes it can be an "eye-opener" for other municipalities in relation to the use of Open Source. We received a request from Tønder, and was not a moment doubt that the project was really good. We went into it - not least because Tønder municipality pays tribute to the principle that open source is used - "if it is good enough", and it is certainly "good enough" in this case. The strategy in the south of Jutland is therefore clear, which makes Tønder municipality, which moves forward and show the way for others. It is really exciting - and that while we can help all pupils in the municipality Tønder a "Christmas present", we are just happy, highlights Morten Kristoffer Hansen.
