The Register can be a little "glib" for my taste. And most of the recent coverage seems to have forgotten that the Conservatives have been talking FOSS for a few years now...

First off, this announcement has also been covered by some more august institutions; such as:

The BBC - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7853086.stm
ZDNet - http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/0,1000000121,39605129,00.htm
Computer World UK - http://www.computerworlduk.com/toolbox/open-source/open-source-business/news/index.cfm?newsid=13011

Secondly, George Osborne, The Shadow Chancellor, has been commenting and espousing the benefits of FOSS for quite some time:

"Another example is Linux. Linux is the open-source operating system that is the main rival to Microsoft Windows.

Linux is constantly updated and improved. Yet no one owns Linux. No one is directing the improvements or updates. The code is available on-line and thousands of independent programmers make changes, fix bugs, and add new features – all for no personal gain."

November 2006 - http://www.georgeosborne.co.uk/shadow_news.php?id=21

"Looking at cost savings that have been achieved by companies and governments all over the world, it's estimated that the UK government could reduce its annual IT bill by over £600m a year if more open source software was used as part of an effective procurement strategy. That's enough to pay for 20,000 extra teachers or 100,000 hip operations.

So that is my vision for open source politics. I'm looking forward to harnessing the wisdom of this particular crowd, and reading your comments at the bottom of this page.

Let's start being open source right now."

Hope this is useful information to some.
