Hi,
No but my thought is that we should make a GUI package manager smarter and able to browse and get the extensions through OOo.
I agree. For sure, we did lots of good things to extensions the last months. Our extensions repository website has lots of users and installing extensions in OpenOffice.org has never been easier. But, yes, integrating that more into the program could be a good option, given that it is technically possible. I fully agree to Jürgen here - we need to be careful and test and specify things beforehand rather than doing a "quick start". But we definitely should have that on our agenda.
I like Jürgen's idea of the repositories, customization, certification and such. It could provide benefit to normal users as well as to enterprise users, but it surely needs some time to work on.
Marketing should also not bundle extension marketing with OOo like what happened on 3.0 when we decide to push the PDF import extension as a core part of the new version of OOo.
Hm, I'm undetermined here. I think the marketing for 3.0 was good, as we really focused on extensions. Sometimes we should have made it more clear that PDF import etc. are "only" extensions, but basically, I think it shows the common thing - what extensions can do to OpenOffice.org. So I surely wouldn't want to limit our marketing view on the core product.
There's work to do on the concept, but I created an initial mockup and wrote down some ideas here: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org_Dashboard_Concept
Thanks for the draft, Ben! Looks awesome! This surely is a good basis to start brainstorming!
