Hi Everybody,
I chose some new features for the screencast. I think it's better to
have a short screencast that highlights few features, rather than a long
one with too much information.
I kept the wording very close to the text at the "what's new" site.
Please give me your feedback regarding the wording or the selection of
the features. I would like to do the screencast as soon as possible and
start the screen recordings on Wednesday, so please send me your
feedback until the 20th.
Thanks,
Rosana
*Screencast OpenOffice.org 3.1*
Hello, this is an introduction to some of the new features of version
3.1 of OpenOffice.org.
Let's start with the improved screen appearance. OpenOffice.org now uses
a technique called anti-aliasing to improve the way it draws on screen
(lines, circles, etc). You will notice an immediate improvement in the
clarity of graphics - particularly charts - wherever they appear
throughout OpenOffice.org.
Dragging graphics is easier, as OpenOffice.org now shows you a 'shadow'
of the object, rather than just a dotted outline, when you drag an
object in a drawing across the screen. This makes it much easier to
place images accurately in complicated drawings.
Now it's possible for a series of editors to carry out a structured
conversation through Comments, just by right-clicking on a Comment and
selecting 'Reply'. As a further enhancement, the Search facility now
also searches the text of Comments.
The zoom slider feature was a popular addition to Writer in
OpenOffice.org 3.0. With 3.1, it's available in Calc and Impress too,
giving quick and accurate control over the level of zoom of the display
on the screen.
Let's now take a look at the new features in Calc:
Renaming sheets is now very simple. You just have to double-click on a
tab in a Calc sheet and the rename dialog box pops up.
And Calc now gives you formula hot hints: it keeps the syntax of a
formula displayed right next to the cell as you type as a handy
aide-memoire for how to use a formula.
And there are also new chart features:
OpenOffice.org charts now offer a range of options for the placement of
axes. This feature has been in great demand, particularly from
educational users.
You may now also choose how OpenOffice.org charts handle missing data
points - leave a gap, assume zero, or continue the line through the
missing value.
Impress now has convenient toolbar buttons to increase or decrease the
font size of text quickly and easily. Make your text fit perfectly in
seconds!
And now numerous new languages like Arabic are supported by OpenOffice.org.
There are a lot more new features. Download OpenOffice.org 3.1 and
discover them for yourself.
