There are still possibilities. There is Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office (1), which seems to be proprietary, but supports MS Offices back till version 2000. And there is Open XML/ODF Translator Add-ins for Office (2), or simply ODF-Converter, which is free software, but requires a more recent version of MSO to work. I used to work for a company where they suggested to put a link to these add-ins into the signature of every outgoing mail they send. I usually send PDF files, and attach the ODF if the other party is supposed to edit it. In the worst case scenario I send RTF. It is something like vegetarianism.
