A suggestion on how to market to this audience (libraries): For this
group, you have a lot of people who are comfortable with what they have.
Change is difficult. However, most understand loss of important
documents, manuscripts, etc. They have all been there and have seen it
first hand or have worked with people who have.

I think the key to acceptance of OpenOffice.org is what makes it
different, yet similar to what they do now.

Most important is the elimination of proprietary software and software
that is changed just to create dependence.

Most will have their own horror stories of manuscripts written in
WordStar, WordPerfect, DEC WPS, etc. that are now gone. They cannot
easily access the files (if at all) or the paper, book, family history,
life story now needs major rewrite or work because of the differences in
file format and software version. Some of these files represent a
lifetime of work.

We need to market our uniqueness (what makes us different), our future
(the software is open), and our sameness (we took the best of all worlds
and made a better, world class product used by the world). Show who is
using it now and wave of the future.

Subject: Re: [marketing] What do we want to do - (was: American Library
Association 2010 Annual Conference )

Hello Christine, et al

Let us back up just a bit here.

Starting with a look at our reason for being at an ALA conference, a
goal.

My suggestion for a goal:

Help build a vibrant OpenOffice.org user community in US libraries.

We could then look at two activities aimed to attaining the goal:

1 - Introduce new users to OpenOffice.org

2 - Connect current users of the OpenOffice.org application with the
OpenOffice.org community, encouraging them to get involved.

Rational for the two activities is to match the two types of ALA
conference attendees we will meet. Those that have never used
OpenOffice.org and those that currently do or have installed it but
don't actually use it.

Then, keeping these activities in mind, moving forward to look at what
artifacts to produce, for the show, which best facilitate the
activities.
